Election Results 2005
The
table below reflects the political balance following the local elections
held on 5 May.
Independent/Resident
Association candidates standing in the County Council and Unitary elections
totalled 519 in 2005, an increase from 359 in 2001. The election results
this year presented a net loss of 20 seats going from 118 to 98 elected
councillors in this election.
Local Elections held the same day as the Parliamentary election continue
to create a barrier for many independent candidates hopeful of breaking
through into local politics. The media attention on national parties together
with an increase in turnout at election time from voters not entirely
interested in local government resulted in a hard campaign and one that
very few new independent candidates were elected.
